Is Neuro Leadership the next fad?

by Clare Goodman

Leadership is a prime topic of research for many academics – successful leaders have been measured, profiled, and categorized to identify the key characteristics to great leadership. The results have been inconclusive, there seems to be no common characteristics shared by all great and effective leaders. When you think about it that's not unexpected, let's face it leaders are people and aren't we all "individuals".

Neuroscience is providing greater insight into leadership through the study of the brain and providing a greater understanding of human thought, emotion, and behavior. For more information on Neuroscience click on http://www.sfn.org/index.cfm?pagename=whatIsNeuroscience

The world of neuroscience has finally collided with leadership to create an emerging field of study Neuro Leadership. Click on the link to hear more about Neuro Leadership http://www.strategy-business.com/press/freearticle/06207?gko=498f4-12656449-15832258

In early Sept I am attending the Neuro Leadership conference in Sydney. It's a 2.5 day conference dedicated to exploring the field of Neuro Leadership and boasts a number of top notch scientists and researchers such as Jeffrey Schwartz, Naomi Eisenburger and Mathew Liberman from UCLA and Craig Hassed from Monash University.

The conference is the 'brain wave' – pardon the pun, of David Rock who is an author and leadership development consultant who has spent the last few years working with these scientists to develop this field.

The conference will include discussion on:

  • Know thyself: the latest neuroscience of mindfulness
  • How can studying the brain improve leadership?
  • Stay cool under pressure – the neuroscience that links stress, performance and emotional regulation.
  • Conscious and unconscious processes in decision making
  • Rewiring the brain using brain plasticity to enhance learning
  • Coaching with the brain in mind
  • The neuroscience of cultural change.

These are thought provoking topics... If you have any questions that you'd liked asked at this conference then just add a comment to this blog and I'll make sure I'll address it to these eminent scientists. What's your view of Neuro Leadership? Has anyone done any work in organisations using this approach? What were the results? Share your stories...
