Let me introduce you to your new best friend - your pre-frontal cortex... A sensitive soul!

by Clare Goodman

As leaders we don't spend a lot of time discussing our pre frontal cortex, we take our ability to think, make choices, reason and have self control for granted, and yet the functioning of our pre frontal cortex makes the difference from clear thinking and focus to procrastination and fog!

Feeling like you need more bandwidth? - SLOW DOWN!

by Clare Goodman

Sometimes I feel like I'm multi-tasking on steroids. My phone is ringing, emails popping up and I'm trying to file client notes, deal with the cat's latest insect victim and get on with designing workshops. At these times I often walk out of the office without my car keys, client notes or laptop and spend more time having to go back and pick up the missing bits of my life.

How wonderful...

by Clare Goodman

I have an invitation to all you pessimists out there, spend a day by starting your sentences with "How wonderful..." and notice how you feel. This was advice given to me recently, as a genetic 'glass half empty' girl I was noticing what was wrong with the world but not paying attention to what is working.

Happiness – a personal quest or an organizational strategy?

by Clare Goodman

As an addict of the 'self help' section in any bookshop even I was astounded to come across a copy of the 'Happiness for Dummies' book. It just goes to show that in this era of consumerism that perhaps there is a growing need to find happiness in something other than a Gucci bag, new BMW or a 10 berth 'Gin Palace. Not there is anything wrong with gaining short term pleasure through these things, it is when we think that when we buy a Calvin Klein perfume that we are buying lasting happiness.

How does fear and uncertainty impact employee engagement?

by Clare Goodman

Fear and uncertainty are creeping into to organisations. Western Australia has in recent years been basking in the success of accelerated growth and the riches followed. We had a low employment rate which sent employers scrabbling for enough employees to deliver on the business opportunities, and mediocrity became the new high performer. Organisations were focusing on building employee engagement, knowing that the shortfall in resources meant that retention was vital. HR teams became the creative hub of the organisation designing new and innovative recruitment drives and developing new enticements for employees to stay.

Is Neuro Leadership the next fad?

by Clare Goodman

Leadership is a prime topic of research for many academics – successful leaders have been measured, profiled, and categorized to identify the key characteristics to great leadership. The results have been inconclusive, there seems to be no common characteristics shared by all great and effective leaders. When you think about it that's not unexpected, let's face it leaders are people and aren't we all "individuals".

Increasing our performance at work: What really motivates us? Have your say.

by Clare Goodman

In our growth obsessed Capitalist society we are constantly looking for ways to increase individual and company performance. The current employment situation with limited resources places even greater pressure on leaders to ‘get more from less’. So how do we raise the bar? How do we motivate our employees and teams to step up, stretch and grow along with the company year after year? And how do we motivate ourselves? How do we renew and re-invigorate ourselves as leaders?
